Nilambur North

The areas under the present Nilambur North Division were portions of former Nilambur Special Division and Nilambur Division (Territorial). The present Nilambur North Forest Division was formed by reorganizing the Reserved Forest and Vested Forests of Malappuram revenue district vide G.O.(Rt) No. 59/88/ F&WLD Dated 27th June 1988. Nilambur Range with Vaniampuzha and Kanjirapuzha Forest Stations, Edavanna Range with Edakkode, Kodumpuzha and Akaampadam Forest Stations and Vazhikadavu Range with Pothukal and Nellikkutha Forest Stations have been carved out of portions of former Nilambur Special Forest Division and Nilambur Territorial Division to constitute the present Nilambur North Forest Division.

The tract dealt with is situated in Ernad and Nilambur Taluk of Malappuram Revenue District. The forests of the Division lie between 11°09’ and 11° 26’ north latitude and 75°48’ and 76°33’ east longitude Greenwich. Nilambur North Division comprises of Nilambur Range with Head Quarters at Nilambur, Edavanna Range with Head Quarters at Nilambur and Vazhikadavu Range with Head Quarters at Palunda with a total Forest Area of 39,863.987 ha. This Division is having two more Ranges namely Central Nursery Range with Head Quarters at Walluvasseri and Reserve Force Range with Head Quarters at Aruvakkode. There is a police contingent for northern region called Rapid Action Force stationed at Aruvakkode also under this division. A Rapid Response Team for sudden action during elephant attacks on habitations is also working under Nilambur Range.
Boundaries:
North: Starting from Arabian Sea through the common boundary of Malappuram and Kozhikode revenue districts up to the common border of Kerala and Tamilnadu states, thence along the interstate boundary upto the top of Wapshare Peak.
East: From Wapshare Peak through eastern boundary of Edakkara, Chungathara and Nilambur villages up to the junction of Amarambalam, Mampad and Nilambur Villages. Thence, along with right bank of Vadapuram River up to Vadapuram bridge. Thence, along Gudalur-Kozhikode road, up to Manjeri and through Manjeri -Malappuram road up to Malappuram.
South: From Malappuram, through Malappuram–Kottakkal road up to Kottakkal. From there along NH 17 to Edarikkode Junction then through Edarikkode-Thirur road up to Thirur. From there up to Bharathapuzha, through Thirur-Chamravattom road. Then through the right bank of Bharathapuzha up to Arabian Sea.
West: Through the western boundary of Malappuram District to north along coast of Arabian sea. (Northwards up to the point where the common boundary of Malappuram - Kozhikode districts touches the Arabian Sea).
